The fighter would face jail if she returned to her country of birth
Bolton boxer Cindy Ngamba is in with a fighting chance of an Olympic medal - after winning her debut bout at the Games. But it has been her inspiring fight to get to this point - not just in boxing but in life - that is truly unbelievable.
It would be a first ever medal for the Olympic Refugee Team - which first competed in Rio 2016. Team GB had wanted Cindy to compete for Britain - and she would have been selected for the squad - however strict Olympic rules prevented her from representing what is now effectively her home nation.Cindy moved to the UK from Cameroon aged 11 and first started boxing at Bolton Lads and Girls Club - she was aged 14 and the only girl boxing.
BBC presenter Claire Balding welled up as she told viewers last night about Cindy's journey to the Olympics. Earlier this year Cindy said: “I feel I’m already part of Great Britain. I train with them, travel with them, compete with them, I just don’t represent them.” She added: “I was with my brother. We went there, to Manchester, every week but this time, we were arrested.” They were sent to separate detention camps in London and spent two days there before the Home Office were satisfied they had family in the UK.
