The tree has been described as a 'world renowned landmark'

Sycamore Gap is widely seen as one of the UK's most iconic trees. The landmark stood beside Hadrian's Wall in Northumberland but has seemingly now been cut down in an 'act of vandalism'.

A statement from Northumberland National Park Authority reads: "The famous tree at Sycamore Gap has come down overnight. We have reason to believe it has been deliberately felled." The Sycamore Gap Tree is believed to be around 300-years-old and is one of the most photographed trees in the country. In 1991, the tree became world-famous when it appeared in the film Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves - which starred Kevin Costner.

Speaking to BBC News, photographer Ian Sproat said he felt like his "heart was ripped out" when he saw the tree had been cut down. He said: "Those memories, belonging to generations of people, have now been destroyed."
