David Clews was a keynote speaker at the recent annual rally of Patriotic Alternative (PA), sharing a platform with some notorious far right activists.

A former Scottish Tory councillor has emerged as a leading influencer for the UK’s biggest race-hate political group . David Clews was a keynote speaker at the recent annual rally of Patriotic Alternative , sharing a platform with some notorious far right activists .

He told them: “Being here at PA the diversity that I’ve seen so far is unbelievable. So far, I have met an anti-Semite, an Islamophobe, a xenophobe, a homophobe, a transphobe and a far-right anti-vax conspiracy theorist – and that’s just Mark Collett.” David Lawrence, spokesperson for anti-fascist group Hope Not Hate, said: “PA is a fringe fascist group, made up of conspiracy cranks. This fact would have been obvious to anyone who listened to the conference speeches, during which the group’s leadership recommended Mein Kampf to the audience and compared PA’s mission to that of Nazi soldiers on the Eastern Front.

Clews’ Unity News Network online TV channel – which touts for cash donations from subscribers – repeatedly refers to the “Covid scam” and his recent post wrapped anti-vax propaganda into the current Israel-Hamas conflict. Clews has blogged about his theory that global powers are actively trying to start a world war.

On his account on the secure Telegram social media platform, Costello praised Clews. He said: “When introducing Emperor David Clews on Saturday I remarked that he is an under-rated peace activist. He is proving himself a giant. David Clews – Emperor of Peace! A voice of sanity in a world gone stark raving mad.”

Clews was a stalwart Tory councillor but stunned locals when he defected to Labour. The flip-flop at Renfrewshire Council came as Clews said he had a “wake-up call” while serving the Houston, Crosslee and Linwood ward. Despite his move to the left, Clews soon switched direction, forming the anti-independence campaign Scotland in Union ahead of the 2014 referendum.
