Disabled student had to pay for specialist university bed

A student with cerebral palsy had to pay for her own specialist equipment to allow her to attend university after her local authority refused.

The 20-year-old, who needs a carer 24/7 along with a "few pieces of equipment", is studying a foundation year at Reading in Berkshire with a view to going to medical school.Ms Stevens said 10 days before she was supposed to be moving she received an email that said the equipment she needed was being refused because it was "out of delivery and servicing area"."I felt like I'd moved to a different country, when in fact I'd only gone 13 miles down the road.

Ms Stevens was able to buy the the items she needed with savings, but said it had been a fight to get the money back. "Able-bodied people aren't restricted on where they can go, so why are disabled people restricted on where they can go, it's just not fair," she said.

If she can afford the university fees what’s the issue with buying your own bed ?

Click bait rubbish.

Let's get it right shall we, she applied for her local Hampshire County Council for funding and was told they don't provide it for outside of their region She could and should have applied to Reading for funding but then the university is being paid to house her so Responsibility

Why can’t she just use a local library instead of a Reading university. It’ll be cheaper for her and the council

That's a lie.

Now I'm glad this lady received the money in the end. But what makes me laugh is the MSM reporting of it. Gov currently getting criticised for not carrying out due diligence re PPE etc but then criticised for carrying it out. What do people want.

This is a story about her NOT having to pay for it. She was reimbursed, that’s NOT paying. Who are you trying to trigger?

So she bought specialist equipment, and after many emails got the school to pay for it. Then she moved off campus, wants to take it with her and is upset the school won't let her?

I think the story is that the university HAD another option for a bed. I experienced university housing and each time it was a sheet metal frame with a thin single mattress.

If MP's can claim thousands for renting a flat even though they work a couple of miles away from home, then this disabled woman should be able to for a one off specialist bed 👍

No she didn't

“She was reimbursed”
