'After cleansing, skin should feel soft and hydrated - you should not be reaching for your moisturiser.'
Feeling tight and dry? After you cleanse your skin in the morning, you’re no doubt desperate to throw on the moisturiser afterwards. Washing your skin can leave it feeling drier and tighter, and in desperate need of a hydration hit. But it seems weird that looking after your skin in this way, can somehow make it feel worse. So what’s going on? Dr Justine Hextall, consultant dermatologist for La Roche Posay, says if you’re experiencing this, there are certain things to look out for.
‘Hard water finds it harder to remove soaps and shampoos from the skin and hair, as it reacts with the fatty acids in the soaps creating residue that sits on the skin and hair causing dryness. ‘Ultimately this damages the skin barrier, causing skin sensitivity, dryness, irritation and scalp flaking.’ You wash your face in the shower How you’re washing your skin makes a difference too. ‘If you wash your face in the shower and the water temperature is too hot this will dry skin,’ Dr Justine says.
