New technology promises to ease the strain caused by energy-guzzling data centres.

So much of what we do every day involves a data centre. Shopping online, streaming TV shows, reading this story - they all need data to be stored and readily available.Data centres need huge amounts of electricity to keep them going - a large facility will use as much electricity as a medium sized town.

If the wider electricity grid is under stress, the electricity to the data centre is shut off and back-up systems immediately kick-in. At Grange Castle, Eaton's UPS intervenes and frees up power on the grid when the grid's electrical frequency, measured in hertz, fluctuates in a way that indicates it is under stress. Many data centres already remove demand from the grid for a pre-defined period using established technology from companies such as Schneider Electric and Vertiv.

Once quantum computing comes along we can slash power consumption. We just need cloud servers to be able to provide consistent bandwidth and latency, then we can host VMs on the cloud and allocate as needed. The problem isn't the servers, it's PC's and their growing power needs.

It's safe to assume that the people who run data centres would like to save on the cost of electricity bills. That the Irish tax wheezes for tech companies ended up causing overuse of electricity in that country is an interesting unintended consequence.

Sure, Reducing the energy consumption of the internet is possible. Improve data center efficiency, optimize network design, use renewable energy sources, implement energy-efficient tech, and encourage users to be more energy-efficient. All stakeholders must work together. AI

Yes

Strangely. Back in the 1990's when I was a chemistry student at the University of Sheffield working on molecular modelling applications like ChemOffice I was told that such a situation couldn't possibly happen. Data centres are not an ecological disaster.
