Glen Affric is run by brothers Calum and Craig McCormick
The brewery and taproom is hard to miss as you emerge from the tunnel into Wirral. Its branding stands out on the side of its imposing industrial units, found on Knox Street, Birkenhead.
There was a move back to Wirral in the early 2000s before Craig worked with his dad Trevor in Shanghai, while Calum studied in Liverpool and mum Alison lived on Merseyside. It was during Trevor and Craig's time in China that the idea of running a brewery first emerged. "We then thought that there was none of that really where we were in the Wirral. Historically there was Peerless and Brimstage , but that was about it. Regularly, we would come back from China to the UK, mum lived here and Calum was doing uni.
"We needed to knock it down and build a bespoke facility. I found these units by fluke. I was flying over to sign a lease on a different unit in the Wirral but they reneged on a contract while I was on the flight from Shanghai." "I was doing the brewing, Calum was doing the bar. We had a 500 litre small kit, that's no longer here but I was brewing non-stop to feed our taproom. We didn't sell a lot outside of our bar.
Craig added: "What excites us is coming up with new flavour combinations and new recipe ideas that we like to try. It almost never happens that we are brewing a beer that we don't like or we wouldn't be interested in. Like anyone in brewing, the brothers are not immune from these challenges. However, they are committed to preserving the quality of their products.
