The TV licence fee has been a hot topic of discussion in recent years, with some Brits looking for ways to avoid payment - but there are some individuals who are exempt from the fee
The TV licence fee has been a hot topic with many people looking for ways to not pay the fee or snag a discount. The BBC 's latest annual report, which was released on Tuesday , revealed that around half a million households did not renew their licences last year, some as a direct response to the hike in fees.
But it's the spiralling cost of the TV licence that might have pushed many to pull the plug. As of April 1 this year, the fee for a black and white TV licence went up by £3.50, from £53.50 to £57, while the standard colour licence saw a steeper rise of £10.50, setting viewers back £169.50 a year. A TV licence is also necessary if you watch live broadcasts on streaming services including Amazon Prime, ITVX, All 4, Sky, Virgin Media, BT, and My5. However, if you only stream on-demand content from these services, a TV licence is not required.
Who doesn't need a TV licence? People over the age of 75 who receive Pension Credit are exempt from purchasing a TV licence. Students living away from their permanent home may also be exempt if they have a TV licence at their main residence and their parents possess one, provided they watch on a device that is not connected to the mains, like a phone, tablet, or laptop.
