The River Trothy in Wales is beset by phosphate pollution from nearby agriculture, but campaigners say regulators are not being tough enough
the data showed local farmers were most likely to be behind the pollution.
Citizen scientist Richard Howell, who monitors the river every week for the group, said the general levels throughout the river suggested it was diffuse pollution, coming from the fields around the catchment, rather than one or two particular spots. One of those farms is subject to continuing enforcement action and three were given formal cautions or warning letters.“It’s coming to the point where the farmers are inspected so few and far between the visits that they just shrug their shoulders.”
