CLEVELAND, Ohio - The Navy’s newest warship shares a name with the Cleveland, and a local company helped build it. The U.S.S. Cleveland is docked on the Lake Erie shore this week.
The ship was built in Wisconsin, but a significant portion of what keeps it battle-ready was made in its namesake city.
‘Man our ship and bring her to life! ’: USS Cleveland arrives downtown this weekend for commissioning Sherwin-Williams supplied roughly 30% of the ship’s coatings, inside and out, according to Taylor Lewis with the company. The paint was created for the Navy. The top sides are designed to keep the ship cool on the inside and reduce the radar signature, Lewis said.
The top coat is called Haze Gray, the color the Navy designates as their top coat. On the bottom, a specialized black coating fights off growth and helps the ship cut through the water. The company goes into ship trials and has to prove that the coating works, Lewis said. Those trials happen on active vessels.
The company typically uses existing ships that are in service.
