The Akron Zoo welcomes two baby endangered spotted turtles who are 'critical for the conservation of their species,' and will be reintroduced to their native habitat.
“What’s better than one baby turtle? TWO baby turtles!” the zoo exclaimed. These two brothers who recently hatched are endangered spotted turtles , and the zoo said their arrival is “critical for the conservation of their species.”
The zoo stated that poaching for the pet trade is mainly to blame for the decline of spotted turtle populations.
The Association of Zoos and Aquariums North American Turtle SAFE program. SAFE stands for saving animals from extinction and is a program whose mission is to combine the power of zoo and aquarium visitors with the resources and collective expertise of AZA members and partners to save animals from extinction.
