KOTZEBUE, Alaska -Nearly 170,000 gallons of treated water spilled near Red Dog Mine on May 14, according to the Alaska Department of Environmental Conservation . According to documents from the DEC , the spill was discovered at 2:30 Wednesday morning when a mine staff worker noticed it and reported it internally.

29 minutes later, the spill was reported to the National Response Center. DEC was informed of the incident at 3:27 A.M. after emergency response crews had already arrived on scene at 3:15 A.M. The mine is operated by Teck Inc., while the land is owned by NANA, a Regional Alaska Native corporation owned by the Iñupiat of northwest Alaska, and is one of the world’s largest zinc mines. To prevent the treated water from making it to the nearby Red Dog Creek, a trench was created across the road to divert the spill into a lined containment area. Vacuum trucks were brought onto the scene and collected approximately 9,700 gallons of the processed water. The majority of the solids in the water settled naturally on the gravel surfaces, and crews have collected 870 cubic yards of the materials. Repairs and modifications to the road and existing snow berms to direct future runoff into a secondary containment area have been made away from sensitive areas. Despite the effort, Red Dog Creek is not frozen, meaning some of the treated water containing zinc, lead, cadmium, and trailing materials. A preliminary sample of the processed water was collected where the water entered the tundra and Red Dog Creek. The samples’ results identified lead as the primary contaminant of concern in the processed water, while the zinc and cadmium are below DEC regulatory cleanup levels, and an additional water sample has been collected downstream of the release and is being analyzed. A flyover has been conducted to monitor for affected wildlife; none have been observed, no impacted fish were observed, and migratory waterfowl have not begun arriving in the region yet. DEC will continue to monitor the response actions as soil samples from the impacted tundra will be collected this summer and analyzed to verify that cleanup levels have been met.Fairbanks police shoot, kill man following deadly domestic disputeSummer kicks off at the Anchorage Public Library with Reading Rendezvous
