The UN's World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) has confirmed the tourism industry's strong recovery from the pandemic, with international travel reaching near-pre-pandemic levels. An estimated 1.4 billion people traveled internationally in 2024, representing 99% of the 2019 figure, the last full year before Covid-19's impact. This travel boom translated into \$1.9 trillion spent within the tourism industry, averaging over \$1,000 per tourist.
Europe emerged as the most popular destination in 2024, attracting 747 million tourists, an impressive feat considering the ongoing war in Ukraine. France was crowned the world's most-visited nation, welcoming 100 million tourists, closely followed by Spain with 98 million. Atout France, France's national tourism marketing department, attributed this success to major events like the 2024 Summer Olympics, the reopening of Notre Dame Cathedral, and the commemoration of the 80th anniversary of the D-Day landings. Meanwhile, other regions witnessed significant growth. Asia and the Pacific attracted 316 million tourists, the Americas welcomed 213 million, the Middle East received 95 million, and Africa saw 74 million visitors. Alongside major tourism hubs, smaller nations celebrated remarkable increases in tourist numbers. Qatar, known for its infrastructure investments, saw a 137% surge, boosted by Qatar Airways' recognition as the world's best airline and Doha's Hamad International Airport's title as the world's best airport.Other notable gains were reported in Andorra, the Dominican Republic, Kuwait, Albania, and El Salvador. Looking ahead to 2025 and beyond, the UNWTO panel of experts emphasized the importance of balancing growth with sustainability, recommending the exploration of lesser-known destinations. Spain, the world's second most-visited country, grappled with overtourism issues, witnessing anti-tourist protests and implementing measures to mitigate its impact. Italy, experiencing a 23% surge in tourism, also sought to address overcrowding in popular cities like Venice and Florence, enacting restrictions on large tour groups and implementing various strategies to prevent overtourism.
