Teacher Banned for Life After Fabricating War Stories to Students

Alexandra Slay, a former Head of Year, has been struck off the teaching register after admitting to inventing elaborate stories about her time in the Australian Army and experiences in war zones. She sent hundreds of messages to students, including fabricated updates on her supposed injuries and 'worst case scenario' letters.

A former Head of Year at Epsom and Ewell High School, Alexandra Slay, has been permanently banned from teaching after a Teaching Regulation Agency (TRA) investigation revealed a pattern of deceitful behavior involving fabricated war stories told to students.

The 34-year-old teacher repeatedly lied to pupils about her supposed experiences in the Australian Army and her involvement in dangerous missions in war zones. These fabrications extended to creating elaborate scenarios, including texting students while pretending to be a fellow soldier reporting her serious injuries, and sending 'worst case scenario' letters detailing her supposed bravery and final wishes.

Miss Slay’s actions were not isolated incidents but a sustained effort to cultivate an inappropriate relationship with students, presenting herself as a mentor and sharing what she described as 'personal diary entries'. One student received over 2,500 emails and messages, many originating from a fictional Lieutenant providing details of Miss Slay’s invented exploits.

The teacher’s attempts to emotionally manipulate a student who tried to establish boundaries were also highlighted, with Miss Slay claiming she needed the student to understand that teachers are not 'punching bags'. The extent of her deception included detailed accounts of deployments, injuries – including being shot in the abdomen and suffering significant blood loss – and even near-death experiences, complete with fabricated medical updates.

The elaborate ruse was ultimately uncovered when texts and emails were discovered on a student’s phone in August 2023, leading to her resignation three months later. The TRA report detailed how Miss Slay admitted her actions were 'fabricated' and a 'lie', explaining she created the stories to 'feel that I belong, was a part of the world'. She also confessed to using codenames when discussing colleagues with students, further demonstrating a breach of professional boundaries.

The tribunal, chaired by Shabana Robertson, found Miss Slay guilty of unacceptable professional conduct, emphasizing the deliberate nature of her actions and the lack of any mitigating circumstances. While indefinitely banned from the profession, Miss Slay has the option to apply for the order to be lifted after two years. The case raises serious concerns about the safeguarding of students and the importance of maintaining professional boundaries within the education system.

The sheer volume of communication with individual students – 2,547 emails with one, 1,175 with another, and 645 with a third – underscores the intensity and inappropriate nature of the relationships Miss Slay fostered. The tribunal’s decision serves as a clear message that such behavior will not be tolerated and that the trust placed in educators must be upheld
