As we’ve been reporting, UAB softball coach Taylor Smartt is taking a step back from the program after allegations of misconduct including abuse and racist remarks.

The emails go on to talk about “deeply concerning” remarks allegedly made by Coach Smart to Auburn regarding her appearance including “racially insensitive comments about her braided hairstyle, which was referred to as “jailhouse braids. ” Such comments are unacceptable in any professional or educational setting”.

Dupree said the experience left her daughter feeling unsupported, defeated, and emotionally exhausted, adding she feels a responsibility to speak up about her daughter’s experience in the hope that future student-athletes are protected from similar treatment. Auburn Dupree’s mom, Lindsey, sent WBRC the email she sent to UAB Athletics Director Mark Ingram and Deputy AD Katreshia Louis-Verrett in late April telling them her daughter was subjected to what she describes as"mental and verbal abuse.

”Dupree also said Smartt allegedly used tactics to punish her daughter physically and mentally by asking players questions while traveling on the team bus like “Who is the most negative teammate? ” and “Who is the moodiest? ”. Questions Dupree says her daughter declined to answer.

She was told there would be consequences if she didn’t. Dupree felt the coach was trying to turn players against each other saying it was one of the ways Smartt controlled the girls. When asked about the allegations, UAB sent WBRC this statement: “We are committed to providing a safe, respectful, and positive experience for our student athletes. When concerns are brought to our attention, we take appropriate steps to investigate them.

Employment matters are handled between the institution and employees. ”-UAB WBRC reached out to the NCAA which replied, saying it does not comment on current, pending or potential investigations.
