The Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT) shut down northbound State Route 176 Thursday after finding the road needs structural repairs.

CLEVELAND, Ohio - The Ohio Department of Transportation shut down northbound State Route 176 Thursday after finding the road needs structural repairs. The portion needing repairs is the State Route 176 north bridge south of West 14th Street near the Steel Yard Commons exit.

According to ODOT, to accommodate repair work, State Route 176 between I-480 and Denison Avenue will close at 4 p.m. and remain closed until early June. ODOT said additional closures in the area include I-480 east and west, the Steel Yard entrance ramp and Denison Avenue. ODOT says the problem involves the bridge’s pier cap, the thick, horizontal concrete section that sits on top of the bridge piers and helps support the roadway.

“This is a significant issue. We always say that if we see a bridge that is unsafe, we’ll close it in a second and this is a case of that. This is unsafe for the motoring public to drive on,” said Brent Kovcas, an ODOT spokesperson.

“I would say it’s definitely going to be hard because there’s a lot of construction here already and to take my time out of the day to waste a couple of minutes to try to find a route, it’s just going to be so much more inconvenient for sure,” one driver told 19 News. Another driver said morning commutes are likely to be especially frustrating.

“It really sucks in the morning. I’m trying to like go to work, but it’s just sometimes I got to get out to other exits so I can be able to go around. ”The detour for I-480 east and west will be I-480 to I-77 north to I-490 west to State Route 176 south. The Steel Yard detour will be north to Quigley to State Route 176 south to I-480 east to I-77 north to I-490 west.

“In the name of safety, we wanted to get this bridge closed as quickly as possible and make sure that everybody involved would be safe,” Kovacs said. “This was not a planned closure. ” ODOT is urging drivers to be patient and plan ahead as crews work to complete repairs and reopen the northbound Jennings.
