FORT RUCKER , Ala. - Fort Rucker ’s Soldier Service Center has a new name honoring Chief Warrant Officer Michael J. Novosel , an Enterprise resident who left a lasting legacy in Army aviation. The Novosel family unveiled a plaque and sign recognizing the renamed CW4 Michael J.
Novosel Soldier Service Center. “Every time one of these things happens, it renews my awareness of what he meant. So it’s still a nice, pleasant reminder that he was great,” said John Novosel, son of CW4 Michael J. Novosel Sr. Novosel was a combat aviator who extracted over 5,000 wounded soldiers during medical evacuations in the Vietnam War. His most daring mission, where he rescued 29 wounded soldiers while wounded himself, earned him a Medal of Honor, the highest military honor. “He would get letters from soldiers thanking him. Because when you’re in the war, and you are shot down, or you’re wounded, and you hear the helicopter going whoop, whoop, whoop, whoop, it’s hope. So he gave a lot of men hope,” said Jeannee Vinyard, daughter of CW4 Michael J. Novosel Sr.Major General Clair A. Gill, AVCOE commanding general, said the family’s example will inspire those who serve at the center. “As we turn to the Novosel family once more for inspiration, it’s our hope that the story and the example of your patriarch will inspire similar service into the heart of our home, the Soldier Service Center. As the professionals meet each day to serve all those who come home,” Gill said. The center serves as a one-stop place for the critical services a soldier may need from the start of their journey to the end, addressing things like housing and legal services. Fort Rucker’s garrison commander said there is no better fit for this honor, recalling Novosel’s impact on him as a young soldier. “And I had an opportunity, the honor of having Mike Novosel speak at my flight school graduation. And so I just think the fact that I have started my career here, and I know over the course of the last 25 years, there have been so many other soldiers, so many other officers, people coming to fulfill their lifelong dream of becoming an Army aviator, and this is where they are going to come first. I think that’s just super powerful, and it really, really is reflective of the history and the legacy of Army Aviation, and just what a true hero and patriot that Mike Novosel was,” said Colonel Jeff Paulus, garrison commander at Fort Rucker.
