BEIJING - China's President Xi Jinping on Sunday touted the ruling Communist Party's fight against Covid-19 and vowed to advance reunification efforts with Taiwan, as he delivered his lengthy work report at the start of the party's most important congress.

The party had led the people in effectively responding to the"severe and complex international situation", resolutely safeguarding national security, fending off major risks and maintaining social stability, he said. Top leaders past and present sat on stage as Mr Xi delivered his report, with the elite Politburo members and party elders in the front row unmasked.

Security in the capital city has been stepped up significantly in recent weeks, with visible police presence at nearly every traffic junction and bridge, and citizen volunteers in red arm bands patrolling street corners. The congress will strengthen President Xi’s hand by giving him a rare third five-year term as general secretary of the CPC and chairman of the Central Military Commission, as well as usher in personnel and policy changes.

, especially amid heightened tensions after United States House Speaker Nancy Pelosi visited the self-ruled island in August.Political pundits say the report is not likely to contain a timetable for reunification with Taiwan, which Beijing has claimed as its own since the 1949 revolution.
