and ends with a one-man cave before you top up the climb. It is named after a cheap sake brand that only costs 150 yen. It's an endurance route with a spicy end that Hirayama uses for his warm-up.The name means fermented beans with added sugar. It has tufas and bean-like rock features, hence the name.

“I fell three times. It still is the biggest memory I have of my climbing career because it was a project no one thought about doing at the time and there I was,” he said with a grin. “I see Singaporeans are very disciplined and want to train hard. Japanese climbers also share the same mindset,” he said, adding that “Japanese climbers are very focused, like craftsmen. They like to perfect the thing they do. They like to dig deep to find out what makes something work. To be a top-level climber, you need to have the mindset to explore and perfect your craft.”He fumbled for his smartphone to translate an oft-used Japanese phrase: Kodawaru.

These days, Hirayama climbs whenever his schedule allows, which can be three to five times a week. And he always ensures he warms up by stretching his body with yoga and his fingers on the fingerboard for an hour. Yes, an hour.
