Waterbombing plane missing as Australia bush fires flare

SYDNEY - A water-bombing plane was missing and feared to have crashed in Australia's south-east on Thursday , as firefighters battled a new outbreak of bush fires whipped up by scorching temperatures and strong winds.

According to its flight data, the aircraft departed the Richmond air force base in western Sydney around 12:15pm local time. It dropped off radar just after 2pm. Belinda Greene, a receptionist at the Bredbo Inn Hotel near the suspected crash site, said she heard police cars racing by in the early afternoon. “We saw a lot of smoke all of a sudden a couple of hours ago,” she told Reuters by telephone.

Wind gusts had been forecast to reach 90 kilometres per hour in some areas, but New South Wales Rural Fire Service commissioner Shane Fitzsimmons said the winds were stronger than expected, especially in the fire-ravaged southeast of the state. The blazes have been followed by extreme weather that has hampered clean-up operations in some areas, including intense storms that have battered parts of Australia with giant hail, floods and landslides.
