A loosely-knit volunteer group of data scientists and health experts are helping to fight COVID-19 in West Java.

JAKARTA - As Indonesia's most populous province weighed tough movement restrictions to stop the new coronavirus, it turned to a loosely-knit volunteer group of data scientists and health experts.

Kawal has set out a clear argument for tougher action in the Southeast Asian country with the biggest death toll in the region by far. On May 20, West Java Governor Ridwan Kamil proclaimed the speed of transmission had been cut to a third and that the"curve had flattened". "We want to prevent Indonesia from being complacent," said Kawal co-founder Ainun Najib, adding that the key to saving lives was implementing clear policies. It is not the only initiative in the field in Indonesia's booming technology sector. Another one, Lapor COVID-19 seeks to crowdsource coronavirus information.

"Generally, people don't believe the data that the government provides, even now, so this is why we see grassroots efforts to filter out the fake news from reliable information."It also counters rampant online misinformation - such as that smelling red onions is effective against coronavirus - and uses crowdsourcing to help hospitals find protective gear.
