MUMBAI/NEW DELHI – In Mrs K. Choudhary’s north Mumbai apartment complex, non-vegetarians would run into an insurmountable wall of resistance if they tried to rent or buy an apartment.
“You can’t dictate what others eat, but I do not cook non-vegetarian food in my house,” said Mrs Choudhary, a widow, as she sat down with her two sisters-in-law for a sumptuous meal of coal-smoked beans and lentil kadhi, a yogurt-based curry.A single mother after her husband died in his thirties, Mrs Choudhary moved 22 years ago into the apartment complex, dominated by people from Gujarat, a western Indian state, to be close to her family.
These vegetarian communities comprise mostly Hindus from Gujarat, and Marwaris, an Indian Hindu ethnic group that originates from the Marwar region of Rajasthan state in north-western India. At times, apartments are advertised online expressly for vegetarian tenants, but there are no legal ways to prevent this discrimination. Property agents are well aware that meat eaters are not welcome in localities dominated by Gujaratis, Marwaris and Jains.“diktat”, they would end up losing their vegetarian clientele.
This phenomenon of veg-only properties often creates roadblocks for non-vegetarians looking for places to rent in Mumbai, limiting their rental options in a city that struggles to find living space for its rapidly growing population and has among the world’s most expensive real estate. Although he received an apology from the builder, he ended up buying an apartment in a neighbouring complex.
This manifestation of militant vegetarianism has crept into the public space in many ways, often with far-reaching consequences for those at the receiving end of this discrimination. Zomato acknowledged that the move could have led to its red-uniformed delivery partners being blocked by certain residential complexes.
