MADISON, Wisconsin: A US hiker who was brutally murdered in Germany last week had just graduated from the University of Illinois with a computer science degree.

According to authorities, Liu and a 22-year-old friend were hiking near Neuschwanstein castle in southern Germany on the afternoon of Jun 14. The Associated Press has not been able to independently confirm Liu's friend's name. The man's name hasn't been released due to German privacy rules. He is suspected of murder, attempted murder and a sexual offence but prosecutors have said it may be three to four months before he's indicted.
