Helicopter crashes near nursery outside Kyiv; casualties confirmed

KYIV – Sixteen people, including two children and Ukraine’s interior minister, were killed when a helicopter crashed near a kindergarten outside the capital Kyiv, officials said on Wednesday.

“In total, 16 people are currently known to have died,” the head of national police, Igor Klymenko, said. Among the dead are several top officials of the interior ministry including Interior Minister Denys Monastyrsky, he said.It was not immediately clear what caused the helicopter to crash. There was no immediate comment from Russia, whose troops invaded Ukraine last February, and Ukrainian officials made no reference to any Russian attack in the area at the time.

“We are finding out information about casualties and the circumstances,” the deputy head of Ukraine’s presidential office, Mr Kyrylo Tymoshenko, wrote on Telegram. AFP, REUTERS
