SYDNEY - Two Australian election candidates were forced to stand down Wednesday as a torrent of offensive social media posts emerged in an increasingly bitter campaign.

It was soon followed by the resignation of fellow Liberal candidate Peter Killin, who used a conservative blog to encourage Christians to join the party to help stop gay people being elected. In recent days the opposition has also had one candidate resign for sharing anti-Semitic conspiracies, while another apologised for sharing rape"jokes" online.
