TOKYO - Tokyo unveiled plans Thursday to offer nightclubs subsidies to close as new coronavirus infections in the capital hit a single-day record, with many linked to entertainment districts.

Host and hostess bars offer guests the opportunity for flirtatious conversation with attractive companions, alongside high-priced drinks.Ms Kaori Kohga, head of the industry association representing hostesses and clubs, gave the announcement a lukewarm reception. "Money may only go to clubs, not individual hostesses," she added."I'm afraid that the effect of the proposed subsidies may be limited."

From tomorrow, baseball stadiums will be able to admit 5,000 spectators - or 50 percent capacity, whichever number is smaller.Japan has had a relatively small coronavirus outbreak, with just over 20,000 recorded cases and a total of 981 deaths.
