Hardened skin can cause pain, which can affect the way one walks.

Hard skin that builds up on the feet causes increased pressure on those areas and can lead to pain while walking or standing.

Mr Beh works in his family’s retail business selling high-end electronics and runs 5 to 8km at least twice a week. Dr Saw Yu Ting, chief podiatrist at Straits Podiatry, says that increased pressure on parts of the feet is a signal to the body to build up extra skin as a cushion. Otherwise, the skin might break down to form a blister, which could lead to an ulcer on the affected part.

Another reason might be the thinning of the fat pad at the ball or heel of the foot, which affects walking. Individuals with medical conditions should seek professional help when it comes to corns and calluses, podiatrists say. The result was ulcers and infection that spread to the bone and other parts of the foot. These patients required an amputation to save their lives and salvage the rest of the limb.

Ms Wong says that scrubbing tools such as pumice stones and foot files should be used with caution. “Aggressively filing your foot may increase the risk of cutting yourself accidentally,” she says. This is even more risky for those with medical conditions that alter sensation beneath the feet.
