Ice baths, cold facials and at-home cryotherapy tools are gaining traction as temperatures soar.

SINGAPORE – Ms Lavania Rosie loves the cold. The 39-year-old Singaporean entrepreneur and dance coach has been submerging her face in a bowl filled with icy water every morning for the past 15 years.“She told me to ice my face on my wedding day,” she recalls. “It closed my pores and made my face look as fresh as a daisy.”

Ms Lavania Rosie credits her youthful looks to the cold, saying she dunks her face in ice water every morning and goes for an ice bath every week. Dr Kelvin Chua, founder and senior medical director of SL Aesthetic Clinic, says cold applications in beauty treatments offer significant benefits to the skin by constricting blood vessels. This in turn helps to reduce puffiness, swelling, facial redness and inflammation.“Integrating cold therapy into our procedures has markedly improved both the process and the results, enhancing the outcome and minimising recovery time,” he says.

Nowadays, however, frotoxes are not as popular due to the emergence of milder alternatives in facial salons and spas. Cryo facials use controlled cooling technologies that provide benefits comparable with frotox, but without the risks of extreme cold exposure, and can be safely administered even by non-medical practitioners in facial salons and spas.

A spokeswoman at Rationale tells The Straits Times that the Cryogenic Resilience Facial is now the brand’s second-most popular facial and its demand is primarily driven by the prevalence of inflammatory skin conditions like redness and sensitivity exacerbated by higher temperatures and humidity. While frotox and cryo facials may not directly compete with Botox in terms of muscle relaxation or wrinkle reduction, many people attest to their rejuvenating effects on the skin.

He recommends tailoring the frequency and duration of cold treatments to individual skin concerns and types. His advice for newcomers? Take it slow because the ideal duration and intensity of cold applications vary from person to person. Used together, they are said to reduce the skin’s surface temperature by 4 deg C, as well as help treat signs of ageing by increasing collagen production and shielding the skin from free radicals.Beyond Angel Aqua Moisture Cream, $19 for 150mlThis moisturiser from the South Korean skincare brand touts a 6.4 deg C drop in skin temperatures.
