SINGAPORE — Back in early March, Liverpool’s march towards their first ever English Premier League title seemed inexorable. A massive 25 points ahead of their nearest rivals Manchester City, few would argue that it would be a highly-impressive, richly-deserved title win for the Reds.
When Yahoo News Singapore asked Liverpool vice-captain James Milner, during a virtual media session organised by Malaysian broadcaster Astro SuperSport, on how the team felt about such barbed comments, he simply shrugged and said, “The lads just ignored it, really. Overcoming setbacks to push even harderIndeed, “keep going” has virtually been Liverpool’s mantra ever since Jurgen Klopp took over the managerial reins in 2015.
And the Reds duly rewarded their huge fanbase with a stunning 2019/20 season – from winning their sixth European Cup, to winning the Uefa Super Cup and Club World Cup, and now to be on the cusp of winning their first top-flight league title in 30 years. “You know, after a defeat, players and managers would say, oh this happened and that happened and that’s why they lost. But Klopp never uses uncertainties as an excuse, he always wants to make sure we enter the game without any doubts.
“I’ve been lucky to have great supporting staff throughout my career,” he said. “But it’s also about realising that tiny little details will add up to having a long career at the top of the game. You know, 1 per cent sometimes makes all the difference.”
