LONDON: The United Kingdom rail staff disrupted the New Year return to work on Tuesday in the latest strike action by workers in a range of sectors over the worst cost-of-living crisis in a generation.

Normally bustling London train stations were quiet on Tuesday, the first normal working day of 2023 after the New Year break. Five days of strike action beginning on Tuesday were to include two 48-hour strikes by around 40,000 members of the National Union of Rail, Maritime, and Transport Workers union.Transport Secretary Mark Harper urged the rail unions to return to the negotiating table.
