Steve Bannon, a former White House adviser and one of Washington’s most strident China hawks, pleaded not guilty on Thursday to charges that he and three others defrauded donors to an online fund meant to support the construction of a wall along the US border with Mexico.
“The defendants defrauded hundreds of thousands of donors, capitalising on their interest in funding a border wall to raise millions of dollars, under the false pretence that all of that money would be spent on construction,” the US Justice Department said in an announcement.
