MADRID: Amnesty International on Monday accused Spanish prosecutors of failing to properly investigate scores of cases linked to the COVID-related deaths of residents of nursing homes.

More than 35,000 elderly nursing home residents are suspected to have died from COVID-19, according to data from the Social Security Ministry, the bulk of them in the first months of the pandemic. Lopez said one staff member had to care for 23 residents including her mother, who was supposed to be kept in an inclined position at all times but was found lying flat.

A national prosecutor dropped an investigation into the home so Lopez turned to a regional prosecutor who told her to pursue a civil case.
