A second patient, a 54-year-old woman, has died after being moved from Daegu to South Korea's second-largest city Busan for treatment.

DAEGU, South Korea - The malls and restaurants in Daegu were empty and streets eerily quiet on Friday after the number of cases of coronavirus in South Korea doubled overnight to 204, almost all of them in and around the fourth largest city.

Scrambling to respond to one of the largest clusters of infection outside China, the government designated Daegu and neighbouring Cheongdo County"special care zones", with plans to send in military medical staff and other health workers, and extra resources, including hospital beds.In Seoul, officials said there would be a ban on holding large demonstrations that often take place at the weekend, Yonhap reported.

The won currency had its worst week in more than four years and the government's benchmark 10-year bond yield fell by the most in more than seven years.Daegu Mayor Kwon Young-jin called it an"unprecedented crisis" for the city of 2.5 million people, advising residents to stay home and warning any kind of mass gathering would be banned.
