A Singaporean engineer and his girlfriend were trapped in the Taiwan earthquake and feared for their lives. They evacuated their building and sought refuge in an open field, but were surrounded by mountains and faced landslides. The couple decided to cut short their holiday and return to Singapore.

A group of Taiwanese men reassured Singapore an engineer Max Zhang and his girlfriend after the Taiwan earthquake on April 3.

What was supposed to be a chill holiday with his girlfriend to mark his first-year milestone at his job turned out to be the most terrifying experience of his life, said Mr Zhang. In a panic, Mr Zhang and his girlfriend ran out barefoot from their third-floor apartment where the refrigerator had toppled over, pipes were hissing and ceramic cups were shattered. A metal gate on the ground floor leading to the outside was locked but was later pried open by a fellow Singaporean tourist, he said.

“We noticed there was a period of inactivity between the aftershocks, where everything was calm. So we timed it and ran up quickly to take our stuff. It was the most exhausting thing I’ve done in my life,” he said.
