The lockdown has no end in sight, and vast parts of Shanghai have yet to ease restrictions amid thousands of newly reported cases every day. Now, due to the strict Covid-19 rules, she has been unable to visit her doctor, and she said she ran out of medicine for three days in early April. Li's nightmare is one of many similar cases among Shanghai residents, whose lives have been stuck in a seemingly never-ending standstill, taking a huge mental health toll in the city.

Ji Longmei, a senior psychological consultant at Shanghai Soul Garden Mental Health Counselling Centre, said several of her former clients who had seemingly managed to control their mental health issues had started online therapy after the lockdown.
