Alexander Ponomarenko allegedly bought a sprawling villa overlooking the Black Sea for the Russian president for $350 millionis the secret owner of a £60 million apartment in London’s most prestigious development which he purchased at the same time, it has been claimed.

Alexander Ponomarenko, who is on a UK sanctions list, purchased a whole floor at One Hyde Park in 2011, through an offshore company, it is understood., bought an apartment registered through a UK-registered company, for his then teenage son amid inevitable questions over how a 19-year-old could afford a property costing £29 million.

It is unclear if authorities are even aware the flat, bought through an offshore company based in the, may ultimately be owned by Mr Ponomarenko. The case highlights the lack of transparency in UK property laws that allows offshore purchases through shell companies, making it difficult to trace the real owner.

Two separate sources, however, have claimed Mr Ponomarenko bought the property, which was sold in 2011 shortly after the Candy brothers began marketing the flats. The apartment, occupying a whole floor in one of the four towers built overlooking Hyde Park, is registered in the BVI.
