SYDNEY - New South Wales Waratahs coach Rob Penney has hit out at reports that Rugby Australia were signing a schoolboy to a multi-million dollar contract, saying they risked undermining morale in a game where players have taken big pay cuts this year.

Rugby Australia, which was plunged into financial crisis by the Covid-19 shutdown, quickly rubbished the figures cited in the reports even if they still hope Suaalii will choose to play rugby union for the Waratahs and ultimately the Wallabies. "The reality is all of our staff are on only percentages of their contractual earnings," Penney told reporters on Thursday .

"We really care for our people and that sort of stuff can cause a level of anxiety that is really unfortunate and unwarranted."
