All Blacks coach Ian Foster believes the absence of South Africa's physically imposing teams from the annual Super Rugby competition has had a negative impact on the New Zealand team.

Four teams from South Africa featured in the 2019 edition of Super Rugby but the pandemic forced the cancellation of the competition in 2020. For the 2021 season, five teams each from Australia and New Zealand played in Super Rugby Trans-Tasman before a new competition, Super Rugby Pacific, was created ahead of next year.Foster also said he wants to make the All Blacks' end-of-season review process less judgmental.
