President Vladimir Putin's state of the nation address comes ahead of the first anniversary of Russia's offensive in Ukraine.

MOSCOW: President Vladimir Putin on Tuesday vowed to continue with Russia's year-long war in Ukraine and accused the US-led NATO alliance of fanning the flames of the conflict in the mistaken belief that it could defeat Russia.

"We were doing everything possible to solve this problem peacefully, negotiating a peaceful way out of this difficult conflict, but behind our backs, a very different scenario was being prepared," Putin saidThe West, Putin said, had let the genie out of the bottle in a host of regions across the world by sowing chaos and war.

Putin also said that he understood how difficult it was for relatives of Russian soldiers who had died fighting in Ukraine, and said he would provide them"targeted support" with a new special fund.
