NIAMEY: Several thousand people demonstrated in the capital of Niger on Sunday in support of last month's military coup, whose leader has warned against outside intervention while proposing a three-year transition of power.
The demonstrators waved placards saying"Stop the military intervention" and"No to sanctions", a reference to cuts in financial aid and trade restrictions imposed by the Economic Community of West African States since the Jul 26 coup. In a televised address late Saturday, Tiani also said he did not want to"confiscate" power and promised a return to civilian rule within three years.

ECOWAS leaders say they have to act now that Niger has become the fourth West African nation since 2020 to suffer a coup, following Burkina Faso, Guinea and Mali.The Sahel region is struggling with growing militant insurgencies linked to Al-Qaeda and the Islamic State group.
