DUBAI : Portugal kicked over a last-gasp penalty to grab the last available berth at next year’s Rugby World Cup as they held the United States to a dramatic 16-16 draw on Friday to qualify by the narrowest of margins.

Samuel Marques kicked over from 35 metres out to secure for the Portuguese a return to France for a second appearance at the World Cup after they competed at the 2007 finals. Portugal, who led 10-9 at halftime, had a better overall points record at the four-team tournament in the United Arab Emirates, boosted by last Saturday’s 85-0 thumping of Kenya.

It was another last-gasp loss for the Americans, who had already faltered with two chances at qualification for France.
