The pre-dawn crackdown marks the latest flashpoint in a protest movement gripping universities across the US.

LOS ANGELES – Hundreds of police officers in riot gear muscled their way into a central plaza of the University of California, Los Angeles , on May 2 to take down a pro-Palestinian protest camp following an hours-long standoff.

Starting around sunset on May 1, officers in tactical gear began filing onto the UCLA campus adjacent to a complex of tents occupied by throngs of demonstrators, live footage from the scene showed. Some protesters were seen donning hard hats, goggles and respirator masks in anticipation of the siege a day after the university declared the encampment unlawful.

The occupants of the outdoor protest camp, set up last week, had remained otherwise peaceful before the melee, in which both sides traded blows and doused each other with pepper spray. As the much-expanded police force entered the campus on the evening of May 1 to clear the encampment, some of the protesters were heard yelling at them, “Where were you yesterday?“
