ADELAIDE: Reigning Olympic champion Mack Horton was the major casualty on day one of the Australian Olympic team swimming trials as he fell just short of qualifying in a scintillating 400 metres freestyle final.

There was little mistaking what was at stake, behind the swimmers starting blocks flashed a large digital banner to underline the do or die nature of the occasion."Who will represent Australia?" it asked.Emma McKeon, who won four medals in Rio and is widely tipped for another robust Olympics, kicked the night off with a blistering swim in the 100m butterfly, to break the Australian record in 56.82.
