Korda was 16-under as she headed to the 10th, with India's Aditi Ashok tied for third on 14-under with Dane Emily Kristene Pedersen at Kasumigaseki Country Club. Overnight leader by three strokes, world number one Korda extended the gap to four with an early birdie but faltered as Ko made a flying start to put the pressure on. She needed one more birdie to join Annika Sorenstam in the record books on 59, 20 years after the Swedish great's groundbreaking day in Phoenix, Arizona, but instead she stumbled with a double-bogey six to finish on nine-under-par. After Ko rolled in a fourth successive birdie on the fifth hole, Korda slid a four-foot birdie putt past the cup to see her lead shaved to two strokes. Korda, on a 15-under total of 198, and Ashok could well have their medals sewn up already depending on the weather. With Ashok also nipping at her heels, the American then imploded on the seventh after landing short of the green. "I think when people ask me if I prepare more or put more meaning than normal (into) majors or Olympics or whatever, I say, 'no', because I go into any type of an event with the same demeanour and the same goal," she told reporters. She needed three attempts to chip over a ledge and run the ball near the pin after her first and second efforts landed short and rolled straight back to her. If the round is unable to be completed, the tournament will revert to the 54-hole results.

After tapping in for five to fall to 14-under with Ko and Ashok, Korda tossed her putter at her bag and strode to the next tee. Sweden's overnight leader Madelene Sagstrom (68) was fifth on eight-under, while Japan's Mone Inami was a stroke further back after a 65. Korda rolled in three early birdies but a bogey on the par-five eighth stalled her momentum on another sweltering day. Korda then drove into a fairway bunker on the eighth but recovered brilliantly, draining a 21-foot birdie putt to cling to the joint lead. She rolled in an eight-foot putt for birdie on the ninth to regain the outright lead after Ko's long birdie putt came up short. "Whatever happens, happens. Ashok bogeyed the hole to fall to second. Rio champion Park Inbee's hopes of defending her title effectively ended with a 71, leaving her 12 strokes adrift of Korda. Home hope Mone Inami was four strokes off the lead in fifth position through 10 holes. After opening with four straight pars, Korda set the course ablaze from the fifth, notching four birdies and an eagle on the sixth to round the turn at 30. China's first major winner Feng Shanshan shot a 68 to be eight behind the leader.
