Thousands of North Koreans have packed into Pyongyang's Kim Il Sung square to pledge their support for the government – all of them wearing masks, unlike at a military parade only two days earlier.

Authorities held the rally on Monday at the start of an"80-Day Campaign", a mass mobilisation drive to boost the economy ahead of a ruling party congress in January.

Troops, workers and students, all of them wearing facemasks, packed into the square, holding slogans including"Let's keep pace with the steps of our dear leader, Comrade Kim Jong Un". Pyongyang closed its borders in January to try to prevent infection by the coronavirus that first emerged in neighbouring China, and at the parade -- when the North showed off its latest missiles -- Kim insisted there had not been a single case in the country, thanking citizens for staying healthy.

What are North Korea's Mass Games?Fireworks, flags and massive synchronized dance moves. \n Enter North Korea's Mass Games. \n The larger than life celebration was held in Pyongyang Sunday (October 11) marking the 75th anniversary of the founding of the ruling Workers' Party. \n Leader Kim Jong Un was greeted with great fanfare as he entered the May Day stadium - with some attendees even moved to tears. \n The North's state-run television KRT on Monday (October 12) aired a video of Kim, flanked by top aides at a long banqueting table, waving to the audience. \n North Korea revived the Mass Games in 2018 following a five-year hiatus, in a bid to sell an image of international engagement and peace while raising much needed foreign currency. \n Despite the name, the Mass Games are large performances involving tens of thousands of dancers, gymnasts, martial artists and singers acting out familiar propaganda themes. \n The games are usually a major draw for tourists, most of them from China, but rights groups say the inclusion of thousands of child performers is tantamount to forced child labor, and testimony collected by defector groups describes harsh training regimes. \n The games went ahead this year despite strict border controls and quarantine measures.
