SEOUL — The influential sister of North Korean leader Kim Jong-un warned of a new response against South Korea if the South kept on loudspeaker broadcasts and scattering leaflets amid simmering tensions.

Kim Yo-jong, sister of North Korea's leader Kim Jong-un, arrives at the Vostochny Сosmodrome before a meeting of Russia's President Vladimir Putin with North Korea's leader Kim Jong-un, in the far eastern Amur region, Russia, Sept 13, 2023.

South Korea resumed loudspeaker broadcasts directed at North Korea on June 9, its military said, following through on a warning demanding that Pyongyang stop sending balloons carrying trash into the South. The decision to resume the broadcasts, as a form of psychological warfare, was made after North Korea began launching on June 8 about 330 balloons with trash attached, with about 80 of them dropping over the border, South Korea's military said.

North Korea has shown some of the angriest reactions toward the leaflet campaign and the loudspeaker broadcasts, in some cases firing weapons at the balloons and speakers.
