SINGAPORE - While there is a need to address the growing wage gap in the country, there is no silver bullet to raising the salaries of lower-wage workers, said Deputy Prime Minister Lawrence Wong.

"So there is no silver bullet in solving this problem. We always have to be careful as we work through solutions. We have to be careful about unintended consequences," he said. The Forward Singapore exercise, launched by Mr Wong in June this year, is a year-long national conversation that aims to harness the views of Singaporeans to shape the nation's future and renew its social compact.

"With progressive wages and Workfare combined together, we want to see lower-wage workers in Singapore have higher starting salaries. But we also want to see them have continued career progression throughout their working lives," he said. Citing the need for continuous skills training and skills upgrading of workers, and offering them more opportunities in the workplace, he said:"In many of these instances, we will need the buy-in from employers. It is very important.

Providing their daily basic needs (H,F,W,M,E,L,T..) in readily available format to the lower wage earners may help their stress level and bring up a good spirit to excel them further. If do not ask them, the answer may remain as 'No'.

Most problems in the adult world don’t have a silver bullet solution just saying

Meanwhile civil servants just got their salary adjustments.. this is not a silver bullet.. 👍

Does companies come clean on how much they spend on comp & benefits? More $ and rewards for those senior mgmt and what have “company” done 4 those in needs?

Reality there is a Shortage of workers. How many % of turnover does the corporate companies spend on employee benefits

Is there actually any “silver bullet” for any situation ? There will be always 2 sides, yin and yang..but the important thing is to be emphatic to the sufferings of the people and not view the situation from only one’s own lens…

Mininum salary for low wage worker = employers hiring less workers. 30000/mth salary for foreign talent = hiring more local talent.
