WELLINGTON - New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern said on Tuesday she plans to meet with US President Donald Trump in New York next week, in what would be the first formal bilateral discussions between the two leaders.

She has publicly rejected Mr Trump's view on the threat of white nationalism and recently said she "completely and utterly disagreed" with his comments telling four minority women lawmakers to go back to where they came from. New Zealand was a strong advocate for the 12-nation Trans-Pacific Partnership , which Mr Trump withdrew the United States from in 2017. A modified trade pact without the US was formed last year.

Ms Ardern's pregnancy, maternity leave and the birth of her daughter while in office also set her apart, with many people seeing it as symbolising progress for women in leadership roles.
