NEW YORK - New York City Mayor Eric Adams told a news conference on Monday that he would implement an aggressive plan to end gun violence in the city, following the fatal shooting of a police office

r and a spate of violent crimes.

There were 1,561 shootings in New York in 2021, a slight increase over the 1,532 shootings in 2020, said Sergeant Edward Riley of the New York City Police Department. The plan also entails using facial recognition technology and implementing new"spot checks" at various entry points into New York City, to screen travellers for illegal guns, Mr Adams said.
