SINGAPORE — A senior forensic pathologist on Monday (July 24) testified to the severely malnourished state of a Myanmar maid when she was abused to death in 2016, describing her muscles as having wasted away.

There was no fat at all surrounding the organs in Ms Piang Ngaih Don's stomach cavity and her bones were jutting out in a state of severe emaciation, said Dr George Paul, who has 42 years of experience in his field.

On top of regular assaults, she was also given very little food, at times surviving on single slices of bread soaked in water and left by the sink for her.Dr Paul conducted the autopsy of Ms Piang Ngaih Don on July 27, 2016, the day after she was found dead in her employer's flat by the family's doctor.

He had ruled out disease processes after examining the body, leaving the only other possibility to be severe malnourishment. He said the examination of the maid's abdominal space where organs lie also showed some abnormal findings. Dr Paul said edema usually occurs if an organ is diseased such that the body is unable to maintain its pressure, and fluid leaks out.

Questioned on how long the victim might have been malnourished, Dr Paul said it would be at least two or three months if not longer.
